Noisy Streets

We have had complaints from residents of Bernard Terrace and St Leonard's Street about noise from people out on the street at night, disturbing their sleep. They attribute the noise to students living in the nearby student residence blocks. One local resident wrote:

"Is there anything being done about the utter bedlam every night on St Leonard's Street? Each night we have to put up with hoards of screaming / shouting students constantly from 10pm then endure it all again when they are on the way back around 2am. Zero respect for the local residents. It's constant noise every night. I suggest the Uni could brief the students on how to be good neighbours. Are they given any advice at all? People who live here have babies that need to sleep, kids that have school and workers that need rest."

Another local resident wrote:

"Unfortunately due to noise pollution on Bernard Terrace we are struggling to get a good night's sleep. We were hoping that the Community Council might be able to give people a voice and perhaps write or speak to the student residence on Bernard Terrace about asking its residents to please be mindful that people are sleeping when they are returning home during the night and assist in any way they can in reducing the street noise. It concerns many residents on this street especially around busy times like freshers week and times of high social activity within the university."

We have contacted Unite Students, and the General Manager for the Edinburgh properties, Bex Moylan, says: "I'll be happy to take your feedback and work with you on solutions going forward."

In a further email Bex Moylan says "I have passed your comments to our team leader for Salisbury Court and Printworks. We will endeavour to update communications to the residents, both directly and via our noticeboards to remind them of the importance of maintaining neighbourly relations. It's an exciting time of year for our new intake of resident both being new to the area and partaking in University events, which can make them a little over zealous! We will certainly monitor it, and are happy to keep in contact should there be any further concerns."

What is your experience? Have you had problems with noise from the streets in the evenings or overnight? We would love to hear from you. The more we hear the greater the chance of getting something done.
