Nicolson Street Bus Shelter

The shelter for people queueing for north-bound buses on Nicolson Street has been removed. There was concern that a new, larger shelter would be installed, making it very difficult to pass by as the pavement is quite narrow there.

We understand that the new shelter was not installed because of basements under the pavement giving insufficient space for foundations for the new shelter, but solutions to this problem were being sought.

We also understood from Councillor Rose at the March meeting of the SCC that there was a possibility of introducing an extra bus stop on this side of the road, to split the buses between two stops, thus reducing the crowding.

The Community Council decided to carry out a survey to find out what the bus stop users want. An online voting procedure was set up on the SCC website, and notices put up at the bus stop to tell people about it, and about 70 votes have been received, showing a strong preference for no shelter here. We also asked people's opinion on two bus stops, and there is a majority in favour of just one bus stop.

I propose that we should communicate this result to the City Council, particularly to Alan Dean, Transport Officer, Public Transport, who replied when I wrote asking what the plans for this stop / shelter were.
